CS 371 - Blog Post #1 (Colby Harrison)
Hi everyone, my name is Colby Harrison and I am a 4th year communication studies student. The online or virtual world absolutely fascinates me, the benefit it has presented to sectors such as communication, entertainment, and creativity within our world but also the consequences of our extreme dependence on this pervasive platform. I have been off Tik-Tok for about 2 years now so yes I am better than you guys (this is a joke btw), but YouTube is a love of mine. YouTube has developed and changed rapidly over the course of my lifetime and it's been so interesting to see the various forms the platform takes. Going from a simple platform for video creators to becoming the industrial machine of content creation that it is today.
I still love the small, unique content creators that the platform still has. People from all corners of the world who are attempting to create a following through their chosen craft. One of my favourite youtubers at the moment is called “Just an Observation” (https://www.youtube.com/c/JustanObservation/featured). Just an Observation sits at only 140k subscribers and has built their channel through TV show and film analysis videos. On shows such as Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, The Sopranos, Succession, some films, and any piece of media that he finds interesting. I found his channel after I finished Better Call Saul this summer. I analyze the shit out of any TV show I watch, so to watch and listen to Just an Observations’ analysis’ of these shows and films relates strongly to my style of watching. He has built his audience off of similar people like me, a niche, observant, and detail obsessed audience of TV and film lovers that marvel at the greatness of some media. His videos are some of the best I’ve seen in a while, and this is a creator that writes their own material, edits their own videos, and publishes them all by themselves. This is why I love youtube. Myself and the other Just an Observation followers tune in everytime he releases a video because WE want to hear what HE has to say. He created his own TV show in a way through youtube. His limited popularity just shows the uniqueness of the medium, that such a fantastic youtuber goes unseen among the massive media landscape of youtube. I have been on YouTube since I was a kid, around 7 years old, and It's been a medium that I continue to use everyday, for youtubers like Just an Observation are like TV shows to me, a one man act, and one that I hope keeps running for a long time
