CS371 Blog Icebreaker (TikTok) - By Sarah Humphreys
Hello! My name is Sarah Humphreys, and I am a third year Communication Studies student, with a minor in Education and North American Studies. I utilize various social media platforms daily, and my favourite platforms would include, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, and TikTok. I love these platforms as I can explore an abundance of interests, including fashion trends, healthy lifestyle accounts, and workout routines. The platform I favour the most is TikTok as you can quickly absorb convenient content when time is limited. TikTok produces short and snappy videos, and I find my algorithm to be very accurate in showcasing my interests. A particular TikTok account that I find compelling is @movementwithjulie (https://www.tiktok.com/@movementwithjulie?lang=en), this account focuses on showcasing workout routines that target different muscles, and each video is conveniently labelled so you can find the desired workout you are looking for instantly. Julie presents a set of workouts in a singular video and the instant gratification aspect of these TikTok videos is what makes them so compelling. Viewers are able to add new workouts to their routines in a quick and convenient way, as the videos get straight to the point.

Do you also enjoy how convenient and quick TikTok videos are?

Here are a few images of Julie's TikTok page:

  1. Hi Sarah! I also appreciate how useful TikTok videos are. How so many different hobbies can be shared within a single app is truly fascinating to witness. I also find it pretty interesting that users can gradually develop new interests because to TikTok's simplicity and the range of creators who utilise it. It clearly demonstrates how effective social media can be.

  2. Hey Sarah! I completely agree with your reasoning behind why TikTok is your favourite platform. It is the easiest pass-time platform. It easily engages every user and formulates a "for you" page that is specifically fixed to have all your preferences and videos you have interacted with the most to pop up on your page to always keep you engaged knowing that the posts are picked based on your interests. To answer your question at the bottom, I definitely enjoy how convenient and quick the videos are, but I also feel like it has developed a very short attention span in myself and probably a lot of others. The app is very distracting and the retention rate on most videos is very low. Don't get me wrong, I love the app and go on it for probably at least an hour a day, but I feel like it has caused a much shorter attention span and much larger dependency on easy distractions for many of us.

  3. Great post Sarah!
I love how convenient Tik Tok is! I love watching cooking videos because it inspires me to chef up a good meal. On the other hand, when the videos are just comedic, I get lazy and watch them for like an hour straight. I find it very distractive, especially if I got stuff to do. All in all, as long as people understand there's a time and place for Tik Tok, it's a pretty good and entertaining pass-time.

  4. Hi Sarah! TikTok is one of my favourite social media apps in terms receiving information quick and efficiently, as well as getting inspiration and ideas on what you can incorporate into your daily life, such as workout videos. I like how the videos get straight to the point and show you things that you may find interesting or helpful on your ForYouPage. Just like how you find inspiration and ideas from workout videos suggested to you, I find mine through the clothing trends of the season. Great post!
