CS371 - "Ice breaker" by Stella Aisenshtat
Hi Everyone! My name is Stella and in this first blog entry I want to introduce you to an Instagram page that I've been flowing for quite some time. @whatfranwore is in essence a curated collection of the outfits actress Fran Drescher wore on set in her sitcom "The Nanny".
The reason I follow this account, and why I find her outfits so compelling, is because in my opinion she was one of, if not the, most influential fashion icon of the 90s. To quote the page itself: "She went toe-to-toe with the runway girls and killed it every week in her living room" (July 9, 2021). She rocked bold, and loud statement pieces by Moschino, Todd Oldham, and Herve Leger, to name a few. All of which were accentuated by her flamboyant and glamorous personality.
She portrayed an ashkenazi woman from New York so when I first watched this show as a little girl, I saw myself reflected in Fran's character and the more I watched the more I wanted to be like her - confident, unapologetic and drop dead gorgeous. To this day, her style and nature inspires me so I enjoy being reminded of her most iconic looks by this page. If you're into fashion, I definitely suggest you take a look at "What Fran Wore". ;)
Hi Stella! Great ideas. Although I have never watched 'The Nanny' and thus being unfamiliar with Fran Drescher, I can see this Instagram page's appeal. Many of us indeed look to social media for outfit inspiration. Personally, I choose to scroll through Pinterest and pin various outfits and look through them every so often. I enjoy how this Instagram page collects Frans looks and compiles them in a place for followers to look through, similar to a Pinterest collection. Anyone who is into fashion would probably understand the appeal of her clothing. Her clothing is not only appealing because of the way it is aesthetically appealing, but as you mention, the symbolic meaning of why she wears it. Fashion is a large area that plays a role in people's daily lives; what other forms of media do you think have shaped your daily habits?
