CS371 - Ice Breaker - irene yang

Hi my name is Irene Yang, I am in my fourth year of communication studies with a minor in User Experience Design. As a social media addict, I do spend quite a lot of time on social media. Here is a list of some of the main social media platforms I like to use: TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and BeReal are the main five platforms I keep on switching in between. To be honest, it was really hard for me to choose one necessary platform I use on a daily basis however the one decided to go with is TikTok.

I use social media so extensively on a daily basis that it causes me to sleep later than usual as a result. Because of this, I do fully agree that social media is an addiction. For those of you who are unfamiliar, TikTok is a platform where you can make and share little videos. And those brief videos can become popular and appear on fyp (For You page). From this site, creators like "Charli D'Amelio" have gained fame.

I've personally been enjoying Travel TikTok since I consider myself to be a really adventurous person who enjoys taking chances and travelling. I've been using these videos to help me map out where I want to go in Europe during reading week.

  1. Hi Irene, much like you also spend way too much time on social media, specifically TikTok. For me I love TikTok cause not only is it an endless stream of entertaining videos, I love that the algorithm puts videos of your specific interests on your For You Page (FYP). While other apps such as Instagram also has an endless amount of content for you to scroll through, it does not have the specific catering to your interests that TikTok has. I personally love that people can gain quick fame through the app though it may also cause issues. What do you think about the easy stardom that TikTok creates?

  2. Great post Irene! I am also minoring in User Experience Design and find myself quite addicted to social media aswell. I would argue tha social media platforms generate content to encourages extensive use on the certain application. Specifically, TikTok especially can provide content that seems so relatable, and geared towards one’s interest that it then becomes challenging as to when to stop. While the user-specific algorithm can be entertaining with endless streaming possibilities, it also portrays various negative outcomes for the user in my opinion. As you mentioned in your post on how it keeps you up at night, I feel as if that is a challenge many users experience. Furthermore, when one has free time it is often spent lingering on social media platforms. Recently, I read an article regarding social media addiction and it stated that it essentially is addictive both physically and psychologically which is quite interesting. It also mentioned that it is due to social media igniting the same part of the brain as to when a person were to take an additive substance. This raises the question as to what short and long term effects social media has to the consumer? Also, if there should be certain limitations like time constraints for each user? I provided the article link below that discusses further on social media addiction! https://www.addictioncenter.com/drugs/social-media-addiction/#:~:text=Due%20to%20the%20effect%20that,when%20taking%20an%20addictive%20substance

  3. Hey Irene!

Great post. I am a social media addict as well (which can be seen as a positive or negative thing of course) but I love to use the same platforms as you do too! I started using TikTok around the pandemic and have been addicted ever since, I can spend hours on this app. I absolutely love traveltok and I follow many accounts that talk about travelling. It also helps when you are going on a trip because you can find so many tips and tricks when you are going to a specific city/country.

  4. Hi Irene, I agree with you that social media is very addicting for a lot of people, I have quite a few friends who stay up later, and put off doing school work to spend the time on social media. I also agree that tiktok is good for mapping out places to go when travelling. Do you find social media stops you from spending time outside travelling when you go on trip? I also find watching people instagram stories gives me ideas of scenic locations that I want to travel to in the future.

  5. Hello Irene! I enjoyed reading your post and found it interesting to see how our generation has become quite reliant on social media to keep us entertained that it has become an addiction. As we have grown up using technology, it is hard for us to live without it as we are constantly relying on it to entertain ourselves and distract us from boredom due to it being readily available. Social media platforms allow us to communicate with each other, share information, and unleash creativity that provides numerous opportunities to be a part of a community. With the rise of TikTok over the past few years, it has become one of the most addictive social media platforms out there in my opinion. The structure of the platform lies on the “For You” page and the algorithm, which is made up of videos that the user would enjoy based on their user activity. All users have a unique For You page with an infinite amount of short videos that range from topics such as dancing, cooking, news, comedy and much more. With social media platforms such as TikTok collecting data to improve their user experience, do you think it is a breach of privacy? Why?

  6. Hey Irene! I also really enjoy watching travel Tik Toks. I often find myself scrolling through them and wanting to visit places based off these Tik Toks. I enjoy how the videos are short so I'm able to watch many in a short amount of time. However, I have noticed that many influencer Tik Tokers will post these travel Tik Toks of snippets of their trip and extremely glamorize their trips and certain destinations. They are very cool to watch but can give off the wrong impression as many viewers will think this is the reality of their entire trip when that is not necessarily the case.

  7. Dear Irene,
I spend a lot of time on social media to find out sports news find out what my friends are doing, and sometimes to listen to someone’s podcast. Regarding the application of TikTok, I came very late to the party; many of my peers told me I should get TikTok and post videos due to my personality and outgoing personality. In the beginning, I was a little bit diss interested in spending much time on the application because I wasn’t comfortable posting videos of myself just yet. I noticed that many people spent hours of their day watching TikTok videos. I didn’t want to be someone who let the application consume because I’ve already used a lot of my time on different social applications like Instagram and Snapchat. I currently only use TikTok, maybe once or twice a week, and I don’t spend more than six minutes during those days on the app because I like to stay productive.
