Blog #1-Kalessy Keyes- CS371
Hey everyone! My name is Kalessy Keyes and I am a third year communications student. I use a variety of social media platforms daily but one of my favourites is definitely BeReal. BeReal is a social media platform which sends all of its users a notification to "BeReal" a a random time each day and you have two minutes to take a photo of what you are doing right then in order for it to be considered on time. These notifications only happen once every 24 hours which I find helpful as it is not a social media platform that requires a lot of time spent on it. Late posts are still accepted but in order to view other peoples posts your have to post one yourself. This in my opinion is ideal as it does not let people participate in viewing other people photos until they take one of their own. Something that does not exist on other social media platforms such as instagram and facebook. You can also only view peoples photos who are friends with you so it is more personal, and there is not filters or editing allowed. I also love that I can look back on every BeReal I have taken and remember on what I did each day, and enjoy the memories of it. It's like looking at a personal highlight reel. You can also share the BeReals you take as well, in all the social media platforms pictured in the screenshot! Does anyone else find BeReal to be one of the most personal social media platforms?
Hello Kalessy! I Totally agree with many of the points you have shared having to do with BeReal. As you said there is minimal time spent on the app each day which is nice, and users are forced to participate before viewing everyone else's BeReals. What I have noticed in the most recent years is that a lot of us, myself included spend a considerable amount of time viewing other peoples content on social media (especially on TikTok) but we aren't contributing/participating ourselves. When you think about it we literally spend our time being consumers and viewers of random peoples lives. I think BeReal is an app that strives to get all of it's users to participate, but because of features that allow you to wait to take your BeReal at a later time, or the fact that you are able to retake the image within the two minutes makes me feel as though its not as real as we may think. With this being said as we discussed in class and as you have stated up above when comparing to other social media platforms BeReal is definitely the most real and personal.
ReplyDeleteHey Kalessy ! I love BeReal too and I believe that a social media platform cannot get any realer because people will always find a way to make their life more desirable. For example, waiting to take your BeReal when you're at the mall instead of being in your bed. Although the purpose of the app is to take it at the same time as everyone else the person still did go to the mall that day so I don't think it is truly that fake or misleading. Especially when it gives everyone a timestamp showing that they posted later than they were supposed to. This is just the new reality we live in. The overall interworking of the app allow for a limited amount of exaggeration or misleading content which is why it has gained so much popularity with Gen Z. It is quick, easy and fun. These are why I have partaken in the app for so long and consistently.
ReplyDeleteHello Kalessy,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your post this week! I specifically liked the part where you talk about BeReal being a personal highlight reel. Although I don't use BeReal I've heard many great things about it. The app definitely makes it more personal in comparison to platforms like Snapchat or Instagram. I definitely need to try this app out and see what its all about. Do you think BeReal can improve on anything? Overall, great post this week.
Hi Kalessy,
ReplyDeleteI thoroughly enjoyed hearing your perspective on BeReal as I am a user too. I really enjoyed how you mentioned that BeReal is a personal social media platform. I, too, feel that BeReal has an authentic aspect to it and allows people to freely post without the pressure of having to always look perfect. However, do you find that people will wait to post until they are doing something interesting? This is a pattern I have noticed as I've been using the app for a few months now.
