Blog Post #2 - Isaac Cardoso

The movie we watched in class "Eighth Grade" showed the extreme side of addiction to social media. Although it was slightly exaggerated I think it depicted a particular side of social media that doesn't get much attention, in the movie it was safe to say that the main character Kayla, was fairly addicted to social media and although she posted regular Youtube videos giving advice and talking, as well as constantly using other apps, in school and outside of school as well she didn't have many friends. I find this is a common thing with social media in that you can have many "friends" and followers online but that doesn't equate to friends in real life. Social media is a highlight reel of people's lives and it can often create jealousy and a feeling of other people's lives being better than yours. In the movie, Kayla struggled with anxiety and I feel like social media can have a really bad effect on people, especially in the case of someone who has anxiety like Kayla or simply anyone who uses social media, it can truly make you feel like an outsider or like you are different when you see everyone else's posts of their perfect lives that are shown across multiple different social media apps. This is one of the bad effects of social media on people's mental health because at the end of the day the majority of the things posted on social media are just a glorification of someone's life that can make you feel like you aren't as good as them.

  1. Great Post!

I agree that social media definitely has a negative impact on peoples mental health. The amount of followers and likes can be such a big deal in peoples head when they really don't mean anything but validation. On the other hand though I don't think that social media will ever change in that aspect. Everyone wants to post their best self on social media and social media wouldn't be the same if that wasn't the case. Personally I follow people on social media who I want to keep up with in their life, I want to see all the things they are doing and I would not be following them to just see photos of them in bed or on the couch. I follow people to see them living their best lives. While people only posting their 'best self' on social media can be harmful, it is also the reason the platforms are so popular.
