Based on what was learned, social media can have a negative impact on mental health, and an article claims that Instagram and other social media platforms have rendered social media toxic for teenagers. This has a significant impact on everyone who posts on Instagram and the trends you need to follow to increase the number of likes on your posts. To expand more on this, platforms like Instagram have created an ideal type of beauty standards for women and how they should look like. Because of this, young people are more prone to be influenced by the mainstream media and take unpredictable measures, this creates a toxic environment for them in particular.
Hi Irene,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your post and definitely agree with you that platforms such as Instagram have created false realties and given people unattainable beauty standards to attempt to replicate. I also agree with you that this creates an extremely toxic and negative environment, where people are made to feel inadequate and essentially thought to compare themselves to others.
Great post Irene. It truly amazes me how great of an affect social media has had on our perception of reality, beauty, life, politics, entertainment, and more. It's twisted our minds to like what it wants us to like and think how it wants us to think. People who disregarded the impact of social media and see it as just entertainment terrify me because these are the people that feed into its negative effects. Maybe its because mental health advocation has gotten much better in recent years but I like to think that it's due to the increase in mental health conditions as a result of us all being under the spotlight of social media.
ReplyDeleteHi Irene, I enjoyed reading your post and agree on the serious effects social media has created to the users. People on social media apps are creating this false reality of themselves in hopes to please the eyes of their followers, however this is creating people to no longer show their authentic self and rather an alternate personality. People continue to feed into the negative cycle and without proper education, teenagers especially, are creating a toxic environment for themselves to which is affecting their mental health. Recently there have been some positive changes as users are starting to post more candid pictures, however social media continues to be very toxic towards user's body image, self esteem, and confidence.
ReplyDeleteHi Irene,
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I completely agree with your statement regarding the negative implications social media can have on the younger generation when it comes to mental health issues. Teenagers are constantly finding themselves comparing each other to a false reality. On social media we only try to display our best moments. This makes one compare and attempt to compete with a certain lifestyle that is extremely toxic, creating mental health issues.
Hi Irene, great post! I agree with you that social media can cause negative impacts on a persons mental health. Social media is engulfed in images of unrealistic and unnatural body standards, promoting this sense of "perfection." This can definitely negatively impact anyones health, especially teenagers who are going through the troubling years of puberty and emotional confusion. Social media also provides people with a platform to spread hate. Some people can be so mean to others. It shocks me how many videos on TikTok I see where people are asking viewers to stop commenting so much hate because it is negatively impacting them. Even with these requests, many people do not care and will still shame others. Social media can be so harmful on someones life, which can definitely lead them to anxiety, depression, etc.
ReplyDeleteHello Irene,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your post and agree with you on how social media negatively affects individuals' mental health. What was once a place to have fun and share your life on the internet has now bred into a toxic environment where people constantly seek popularity on the platform. Although there are celebrities and influencers who have had cosmetic procedures done to achieve the perfect look, they continue to deny these accusations. These unrealistic beauty standards foster a negative environment for young individuals where they constantly compare themselves to others and try to look like them by wearing similar clothes and getting the same haircut. The extent to which people go to achieve their looks shows how much the conceptual matrix of social media and social life, in terms of power, relates to this situation where it influences their decisions. With the amount of photoshop being done to celebrities' and influencers' posts, fans notice that they do not look like that in real life. Why do you think celebrities and influencers edit their paparazzi photos, knowing that the original copy is out there?
