CS371 - Blog Post #2

In this week's blog post, the idea of power as affordances will be related to the documentary, Eight Grade. Firstly, the term, power as affordances, and the basis of the documentary must be explained as this will allow one to understand their strong relationship. The concept, of power as affordances, can be defined from the course notes by stating, “Power as affordances inherent in media forms-the term “affordance” has been used to account for the ways that technological artifacts or platforms privilege, open up, or constrain particular actions and social practices” (Herman, 2022). In addition, the documentary follows a young teenage girl, Kayla, as she battles anxiety while attempting to fit in with her peers. Considering these explanations, one can identify a strong relationship between the two topics, as power as affordances discusses the idea that technological devices do provide one with privileges. This privilege can be seen in the documentary when Kayla is invited to a pool party through the form of Instagram messages, as it is a privilege for one to message peers through online platforms. In light of these descriptions, one can now fully grasp how the idea of power as affordances is related to the chosen documentary, Eighth Grade. In sum, the idea of power as affordances have been examined, and how it shares a firm relationship with the documentary, Eight Grade.

  1. Hello! Great Post! I really like the use of Eighth Grade to describe power as affordances as Kaylas phone basically has full control over what she does. As well as allowing her to have opportunities that someone with the access to social media wouldn't have, like you mentioned an online invite to a party, I additionally think this power is not always a good thing because it allow the opportunity for social media platforms to be used to communicate negative things to others.
