CS371: Blog Post #2-Jake Rybak
Since TikTok's release in 2016, this social media app has rapidly increased in popularity and has been one of the main platforms that individuals utilize in their daily lives. Although there are many similarities between TikTok and other dominant social media sites, TikTok has separated itself from its competition through various aspects of its app such as its unique algorithms that display personalized content to the user. Within Bhandari and Bimo's article titled; "Why's Everyone on TikTok Now?", they discuss how the 'For You' page of the app allows the algorithm to determine the type of video content the user is exposed to which makes up the majority of the experience on the platform (Bhandari & Bimo, 2). I am someone who goes on TikTok during multiple points of my day and the type of content I view on my 'For You' page fluctuates based on my recent activities or conversations. For example, when I finished watching the most recent season of 'Stranger Things, my personalized page was full of content related to the show. Another example is on Sundays when football is constantly on my mind, TikTok reflects that and shows me a lot of content surrounding fantasy football as well as betting tips for the games. I did not download the app when the app first gained large traction popularity as I did not feel like I needed more social media apps however, during the start of the pandemic when I was looking for ways to fill my time, I decided to download the app and it has become one of the main platforms I utilize daily.
Below I have attached a link to an article providing further details about TikTok's' 'For You' page and its algorithms if you have any interest in using the algorithm to your own benefit by seeing videos you want to see or making sure your videos get exposure to a suitable audience.
Hey Jake,
ReplyDeleteI really liked reading your post this week! I especially liked the part where you mention how Tik Tok "personalizes" your content. I totally agree with this as the app also personalizes the content I watch. Do you think there are other apps similar to Tik Tok and its functions? Overall, great post.
Hi Jake! great post this week! I too am constantly noticing how when I am either watching a new show or movie, or even thinking about something completely random it will somehow show up on my for you page. After having a quick read through of the article that you provided, it made it more clear how this would happen. Through different things that we like, watch, listen to, or even search up on our phones and other devices, the app can then create an algorithm that will lead us to content related to what we are currently watching or thinking of. Personally, I think that this is super interesting!
