Eighth Grade-Victoria Sordi

In the film Eighth Grade, it was apparent that social media had a huge influence on Kayla's life. Social media has become a huge part of out lives, filtering the way we act in real life and behind a screen. Kayla evidently portrayed a different persona as soon as her camera turned on. This is commonly seen in society because of social media. I find that it is easy to fall into the hole of social media, where you begin to filter yourself. Whenever I consider posting on social media apps, I find that I over analyze my pictures because I am worried about what people will say about my post. Kayla's use of social media can be tied into Nancy Bayms theoretical perspective of domestication of technology. Nancy Baym theory of domestication of technology introduces the idea that technology has become a huge factor of our life. This can be seen in nearly anyone, I think many individuals hide behind a screen and portray an online persona. Furthermore, many influencers who people look up to are very filtered online which is another reason as to why I believe it shapes how people act online.

  1. Great post! I definitely do agree that people might act a different way on social media in order to portray this false reality and or life that they may be living. It is in our nature to post and share more more positive content online as we don't necessarily want people knowing what it is we are potentially struggling with. Especially when it comes to influencers or celebrities, they are constantly being watched and or tracked online and it can truly create a sense of anxiety. As much as I would "love" to be famous and live a luxurious lifestyle I don't think that my anxiety would be able to handle people watching my every move, especially online.

  2. I enjoyed reading your post Victoria. As social media continues to grow we become more attached to various platforms and it is apparent that it makes an impact on people's lives. As you mentioned a good example of this is in the movie "Eighth Grade" when Kayla acted differently on social media than how she is in person. When scrolling through apps like Instagram and TikTok someone may portray themselves differently than how they really are in person. This makes young teenagers think they need to be or look a certain way to fit in. Just as Nancy Baym expresses, the online persona is and will continue to become a major factor in people's lives without them even thinking twice about the difference as it is becoming second nature to us.

  3. Great post Victoria! I also mentioned in my initial post that the film Eighth Grade takes on a domestication of technology perspective. Domestication of technology looks at how one interacts with media in their everyday life, and how it affects how they interact. We can see that throughout the film Kayla alters the way she acts on a screen, with the examples you have provided of filters. Kayla does this due to the fact the internet has an influence on what the ideal image is, therefore transforming her identity into a completely different person from how she is in real life.
