Blog Post #4
Hello Everyone,
This blog post I am going to dive into a theme we have covered in the course as well as presented in our midterm papers. I find it interesting to study the idea that in the past, theorists viewed scribal practices and the written word to be inferior to speech and rhetoric because writing proposed undermined memory and weakening of the mind. The reason why this interests me is because of how much writing has played a role in my life. There are constant transformations that we have been educated about in this course such as speech to the written word, the written word to digitized media, etc. From being exposed to dictionaries, story books, and printed news coverage since I was young, written words and print has been crucial to my academic development. Fast forward to today, especially being a communications scholar, writing composes almost all of my degree considering much of my assignments are based on reading and writing.
With that being said, we have been a part of a generation that took the written word and formed into digitalized communication technologies, for instance the smartphone or laptops. A prominent example of this could also be our ability to scan documents, convert handwritten messages to searchable digital documents, or even being able to handwrite on these digital technologies like IPads. In my opinion, it is interesting to view these things from the bigger picture because we are able to get a better understanding of how technological advancements impact our lives. I have attached a Youtube video that presents ideas about digital transformations. It explains that digital transformation is perhaps an overused buzzword yet it thoroughly explains what it means and how it can apply to organizations today. These are things to consider if you are going into a field that absorbs digital technologies.
Thanks,

Hi Alexa,
ReplyDeleteI agree, I honestly have not realized how much the written word has transformed our means of communication without us even noticing. Since we've grown up surrounded by technology, I feel like it has always just been something assimilated into our everyday lives. I see where the Greeks were coming from in the way that writing as it has transformed into the world of digital media has somewhat taken over our lives. Many people may not experience meaningful conversations and gain knowledge from someone on a daily basis because of how easy it is to do a quick google search. Your video showed a great example of how we can't simply let the technology do all the work when forming a business, it must be connected with the business models for it too succeed.
Overall, I found your post very insightful!
