Hi everyone! One of my favourite social media platforms is Instagram. Something within the world of Instagram that I find interesting is the “World Record Egg”, posted in January of 2019. The account, @world_record_egg, posted a singular picture of an egg to its account in hopes of setting the world record for the most liked post on Instagram. At the time, this meant beating Kylie Jenner, who’s post had 18 million likes. The account quickly achieved its goal, the picture of the egg currently having over 56 million likes. It was later revealed that the account was owed by advertisers who featured the egg in a Hulu commercial, aiming to raise mental health awareness. I find it fascinating that even before this was known to be its purpose, the campaign on the basis of setting a world record was capable of causing such mass hysteria across the internet. It is baffling that I remember my 17-year-old self being excited by this seemingly silly movement, having even liked the picture myself, yet I had no concrete reason as to why. I think it allowed users to feel a sense of belonging — you were able to have a role in this collective common goal, no matter how ridiculous. This post showcases how powerful of a communication tool Instagram truly is.

  1. I totally forgot about this and can't believe it was already 3 years ago! As you said it's crazy that people (along with myself) were so quick to participate even without knowing what the purpose of the egg post was. This example just goes to show how powerful the internet and these social media platforms really are, but also how easy platforms like instagram allow us to come together to raise awareness, money, and or just beat a record for the most liked photo.

  2. Hey Avery,
It’s honestly crazy how one person comes up with this idea, and millions of people follow through by liking a simple photo of an egg due to social media. I remember people posting it on their social media accounts, telling everyone to like it, and I participated in the trend by liking the photo. It just shows you the power of social media and how many audiences it can reach by one person sharing a post. I recently just looked up the account on Instagram, and it’s actually a verified account with 4.7 million followers, which is bizarre since it’s just a regular picture of an egg.

  3. Hi Avery,
I loved following this post when it first came out on Instagram! I thought it was so funny that so many people liked a photo of an egg. I remember hearing when it beat out Kylie's post of Stormi and I didn't believe it at first. I agree with you how this photo brought a sense of belonging, more instagram pages should follow this.

  4. Hi Avery,
This just brought back a great memory! I completely forgot about this post and it initially blowing up. I remember my friends and even family and I would check the egg to see if it finally broke the record and although it was completely pointless it's kind of cool to see everyone coming together to do something random and fun on social media!
