CS-371 Blog Post #2- Abbegayle Zwep

For my blog post this week I am focusing on social media alternative search engines. In the extra resources, and readings for unit one I read the article For Gen Z TikTok Is the New Search Engine.  This article talks about how Gen Z is using TikTok for many search inquiries that used to be done on Google. This resonates with me because I notice myself turning to TikTok as my first choice for a search engine. My family just moved to a new house so in planning out how to decorate my new room I turned to TikTok for inspiration. After finding pieces I liked on TikTok I searched where to buy items like that. Usually, I would just type into google any questions I have but Tiktok allowed it to feel more personal. Instead of just top companies coming up based on ads it is real people's experiences and reviews. The reviews feel more personal and give good tips on what they like and dislike about products or what they would change. I like the visual aspect of being able to see a video or picture of how it fits someone's space to decide if it is the right product for me.

  1. Hi!
When I used to have TikTok I also found myself using it as a search engine for this exact same reason. I don't think it was only the fact that it felt personal but it felt like the people making the videos were for "ordinary people" made by ordinary people. However a lot of these videos are sponsored or were ads for these big companies. In reality we will never truly know the video is simply so we can consume products or if it is genuine. I do think you raise a good point though about experiences and reviews. These short clips let you sift through multiple videos and people to find the best inspiration and hopefully the most "accurate" video.
    Great post!

  2. Hi,

Great post! I loved the example you used about your plans for decorating your room. I resonate with this idea because I understand how Google lacks in coming up with searches that are unique or less generic images when it comes to creativity. I thus usually go to Pinterest when looking for ideas. Although Pinterest is an excellent source for getting far original content, TikTok provides real people providing inspiration that could be to your liking or not. Still, they have a vast range of opinions and preferences. This example is relevant as it exemplifies how our mundane task, such as setting up our room, has shifted with the emergence of TikTok.

    Thanks,

    Pooja S.
